MIXED SPICE MIX USES AND RECIPES
Our Mixed Spice blend adds warming depth to a variety of sweet dishes. Use 1-2 teaspoons in fruit cakes, puddings, biscuits and festive bakes for traditional flavour. Sprinkle into pancake or waffle batter for a subtle spiced note. Add to porridge with a drizzle of honey for a comforting breakfast, or stir into hot chocolate or coffee for aromatic warmth. For savoury applications, try a pinch in pumpkin soup, squash dishes or slow-cooked meats – particularly lamb or pork – where its sweet notes create intriguing complexity. For homemade spiced apple cider, simply add 1 teaspoon per litre and gently warm.
Quick Spiced Biscuits: Cream together 100g softened butter and 50g caster sugar. Beat in 1 egg yolk and 1 tablespoon golden syrup. Sift in 175g plain flour, 2 teaspoons Mixed Spice and a pinch of salt. Mix to form a dough, roll out to 5mm thickness and cut into shapes. Bake at 180°C for 10-12 minutes until golden. Cool, then dust with icing sugar if desired.
Spiced Apple Crumble: Peel, core and slice 4 large cooking apples. Place in a baking dish with 2 tablespoons water, 50g brown sugar and 1 teaspoon Mixed Spice. For the topping, rub 100g cold butter into 150g plain flour until breadcrumb-like, then stir in 75g sugar and 1 teaspoon Mixed Spice. Sprinkle over the apples and bake at 190°C for 30-35 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve with custard or cream.
